A TEAM of ponies which bolted and were only just stopped in time before going headlong into Cirencester’s main stream of traffic, with one carriage losing a whole wheel and Prince Philip’s carriage being badly damaged after turning over and throwing its driver out head-first was just some of the drama at the National Carriage Driving Championships held in Cirencester Park in 1976.

It was one of the most successful carriage events held with 70 entries in the seven classes and more than 5,000 people turning out to enjoy the spectacle.

The winner of the teams of four was Mr George Bowman, the national champion, who had also won the race the previous two years.

Gloucestershire was well represented on the podium with winners receiving, in addition to their prize money and rosettes, a special bottle of the Famous Grouse whisky from sponsors Matthew Gloag and Son.

In the class for pairs over 15.2 hands, Mr DS Cripps of Lechlade finished in third place driving his chestnut Welsh Cobbs, Airvelly Benpo and Pink Brutus.

Miss SL Smith of Lower Slaughter, drove her brown Hackney ponies, Hurstwood Marvel and Hurstwood Yes Yes, and took second place in her class.

Competitors took to the 16-mile, cross-country competition through surrounding villages, including Sapperton where drivers and their horses were able to stop at the Bell Inn for a break.
