LAST weekend saw an incredible partnership for two Gloucestershire Over 70s players as they romped to a 10-wicket win over Wales Over 70s in the National Over 70s competition.

Frocester's John Evans and fellow opener Keith Daniels put on an astonishing 326 runs for the first wicket as Gloucestershire posted 326 without losing a wicket in 45 overs.

The pair played through the entirety of the 45 overs as Evans scored a whopping 177 not-out, including 27 fours, whilst Daniels contributed 141 runs at Brecon Cricket Club.

The pair cruised to 84 for no loss after 20 overs before reaching 171 off 30 and then upping the pace again to reach their centuries.

Remarkably, the pair scored at more than a run a ball in each of the last sixteen overs as they set Cricket Wales 327 to win in the National Over 70s 1st XI Championship.

Wales were up against it from there but made a good fist of the chase, with the openers Alistair Lawson (63) and Gwyn Price (70) putting on 123 runs for the first wicket.

Brian Skinner (59) tried to carry on the scoring and he too did a decent job, but Wales were beaten by overs in the end, finishing on 254/3.

71-year-old Evans is averaging 86 runs this season after passing the 50-mark five times in 10 innings, including two centuries.

His form has earned him the captaincy of the England Over 70s squad for three one-day internationals in August against Australia, with Gloucestershire team-mate Nigel Belletty also selected as wicketkeeper.
