Southern League 2020/21 Division 1 South

Cirencester Town 0 Sholing 2

The Boatmen of Sholing visited The Corinium Stadium and scored twice late on to end The Centurions unbeaten start to their league season.

Almost from the kick-off Dan Mason tested home custodian Dan Lawrence and Josh Parsons made a ‘jinking’ run to the by-line suggesting spectators might be in for an exciting match.

It was not to be – as in a match dominated by the defences there were few chances and not very much of the fluid football that has been on display in recent weeks.

Ciren worked the ball forward down both flanks with Parsons often involved at some stage whilst Sholing countered with a more direct approach and it was a neat move from Ciren that created an opening for Tommy Anderson to shoot past the far left post.

The second half also started promisingly as neat play from Cirencester eventually resulted in Ellis Dunton heading over the bar and Sholing countering immediately for Dan Mason to fire over the top right corner.

Just after the mid-point he unleashed a fierce strike that Lawrence finger-tipped onto his cross-bar.

At this stage Sholing were pressing more often and shortly after Ryan Gosney pulled off a tremendous reflex save, to keep-out Parsons close range header, they opened the scoring as Brad Targett got in behind the home defence to tuck his shot inside the far right post.

Cirencester responded as Aidan Bennett fired wide, and both Josh Nelmes and Parsons high – header and shot respectively – but a ‘cross-cum-shot’ from the left flank by Marvin McLean drifted over Lawrence to seal the result despite a couple of late efforts from the hosts.
