League Challenge Cup
Cirencester Town 1
Wantage Town 1
Ciren win 4-3 on penalties
CHARLIE GRIFFIN'S Cirencester Town progressed to the next round of the League Challenge Cup following a penalty shootout, writes Dave Pyzer.
Wantage Town, of the Central Division, proved stubborn opponents - as despite plenty of possession and Jordan Morris crashing a shot against the crossbar, the home side struggled to breakthrough - and in the closing minutes of the first half they took the lead with their only shot of the half when Jordan Howe fired into the top right corner from 30 yards.
Almost immediately Forest Green loanee Ollie Artwell made a driving run down the right flank to the corner before crossing for Aidan Bennett to provide the finishing touch from close range to equalise.
The second half was more of the same with Cirencester retaining possession for long periods and Wantage defending for all they were worth, with many a block in their penalty area before
counter-attacking.
At the end of the 90 minutes it was still all-square and it went to penalties with Cirencester going through after Bennett, Alan Griifin, Tommy Ouldridge and Will Christopher scored from the spot.
