Cirencester’s Telstars skittles team have done it again. They’ve pulled off yet another convincing win in the Serious About Events tournament series.

The team travelled to Weston-super-Mare where they were competing against 44 teams drawn from Wales, Somerset, Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. Captain Gwyn Jones said the entire team found their form straight away and delivered a convincing victory over the weekend, claiming the trophy with a score of 423, a clear ten points ahead of their nearest rivals.

The Telstars, who play out of Cirencester’s Jubilee Club, are one of the most successful and longest running clubs competing in the annual tournaments. This was their 23rd year of entering.

Their performance in Weston was a repeat of last year when they won the biggest tournament of the programme, overcoming 40 teams in a weekend competition on Hayling Island. They were runners up at a similar tournament in Bude in 2017.

So what is the secret of their success?

"We’ve been playing skittles together for 34 years now," said captain Gwyn. "We’re family, friends, school friends, the same team. It’s just terrific."

Not surprisingly, the Telstars are enjoying another great season in Cirencester Division League 1.

Serious About Events stage a series of major competitions for skittles teams in south coast resorts every year. They also organise the British Skittles Championships, currently in its local round stage. The finals will take place in Torquay in September.
