June Midweek Medal

FRESHENED up by a short break away from golf – during which he turned out for Birdlip Cricket Club – Toby Harris warmed up nicely for his defence of the Club Championship with an emphatic win in the June Midweek Medal.

An ugly double bogey 7 on the par 5 17th might have spoiled many a medal card, but not when you have already bagged six birdies for a best-gross-of-the-day round of 70.

Toby’s nett 65 saw him win by three shots from Michael Kelly, Steve Bishop and Nick Peare – all of whom shot nett 68s.

Dominic O’Neill (69) and Simon Byrne (70) completed the top of the leaderboard.

Harris hit two off the trio of birdie twos recorded – on the 2nd and 13th – with fellow A team player Tom Waller getting the other on the 11th.

Ross-on-Wye A 2½ Cirencester A 3½

CIRENCESTER’S A team, who came agonisingly close to winning the top division of the North Glos Foursomes League last season, got back to winning ways with a marvellous away win at reigning champions Ross-on-Wye.

The winning pairings were: Toby Harris & Darren Robison (4&3), Mark Foster & Mike Stradling (1 up) and Tom Waller & Johnny Cowley (4&2).

The young guns, Lewis Flett and Chalmers Phinn brought home the half-point.

Lilley Brook B 4½ Cirencester B 1½

LILLEY Brook’s B team proved too strong for the visitors but there were still some notable performances from the visitors – even if Duncan Barnes’s seven-match winning streak came to an end.

A superb round by Lee Agent, ably backed up by Andrew Dickson, saw the Cirencester men win comfortably.

Andy Miles continued his fine form when partnering Gary Whiteman as they gained a hard-fought half.

Despite playing some scintillating golf, captain Stephen Springthorpe and Jonathan Wells were reeled in and beaten on the final green by their Lilley Brook counterparts.

The home side required just 11 putts on the last nine holes – and only one of their hole-outs came from inside 15 feet.

Their birdie, birdie finish was enough to snatch the spoils.

There is a real shortage of players week by week for the B team, so please put your name down if you are interested in playing.

Cirencester 3½ Stinchcombe 3½

AN honourable draw was played out between Cirencester and Stinchcombe in a match which went to the wire.

After early contributions from Gerry Bruton & Mike Helyer (a half), along with a magnificent 7&6 victory from captain David Lowbridge & Mark Woodhead, the home side were staring at defeat until the final two pairings came up trumps.

Congratulations to Mick Moore & Rob Bell (4&3) alone with Mike Staples & Martin Taylor (4&2) for helping to force a draw
