Joe Hughes described the scoring of his fight against Robbie Davies Jr as 'a bare face lie.'

The boxer, from Malmesbury, lost his EBU European super-lightweight title to British champion Robbie Davies Jr on Saturday by a unanimous decision in Liverpool.

The fight was scored 115-113, 115-114 with one judge scoring it 118-110 in the Liverpudlian's favour, a decision Hughes is baffled by.

"For one judge to give 118-110 is beyond belief," said Hughes.

"He's either corrupt or incompetent, it's a bare face lie and makes no sense to me.

"I'd love to hear an explanation because I'd say 80-90 per cent of people said I should have won the fight.

"Going into it I knew I had to win it in a big way to do it.

"I felt I hadn't won clear enough immediately afterwards, I'm really hard on myself.

"I watched it back a couple of times and I cannot see how they gave that decision."

Hughes admitted he was probably fighting against the odds given Davies Jr was fighting in his hometown.

After the bell went, Hughes felt he hadn't quite done enough to win but after watching it back he felt he believes he won the fight.

Hughes has been chasing the British title for some time and has grown frustrated with some of the judging in his British title fights but he did have kind words for Davies Jr.

"It's the second time I've been stitched up for the British title. If I look at it pessimistically, I feel they don't want me to have the title.

"It's probably not true but it feels like it.

"I felt I hadn't won clear enough immediately afterwards, I'm really hard on myself but I've watched it a couple of times and I cannot see how they gave that decision.

"I knew I was up against it and I wasn't shocked in the slightest, it's what happens.

"I believe the board want their Brit to win it sub-consciously, but I'm not accusing them of that.

"It is subjective, a lot of the rounds were close.

"No disrespect to Robbie. He's a lovely lad, a gent so fair play to him, it's not his fault.

The immediate future is unclear for Hughes but he made it clear he'd like the chance to reclaim his title and face Davies Jr again.

"I'm chasing a rematch, if that isn't available we'll have to see, it's a waiting game," Hughes revealed.

"It's frustrating because it would have put me in line for a world title shot.

"I'm not normally in boring fights and it was a good fight so hopefully that helps get a rematch if people enjoyed it."

General Secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control Robert Smith responded to Hughes' comments.

Smith said: "It was a good contest between two evenly matched boxers.  All three judges had Mr. Davies winning.

"Mr Hughes comments will be considered by the Board next week."
