Fountain Cup

Purton were knocked out of the Fountain Cup after losing a nine-goal thriller against Wroughton on Saturday in the quarter-final.

Wroughton were top of the Wiltshire Senior League ahead of the game and proved too strong for Purton.

It was Purton who got the upper hand when Joe Skudlarz delivered a superb cross in to the Wroughton area for Will Backhouse to head superbly in to the back of the net for 1-0 on 20 minutes.

Wroughton were quick to reply though when there striker Shane Hibbert used his pace to break through the Purton back line and slot calmly past Purton Keeper Luke Kuczynski.

Wroughton then took the lead five minutes later when Aaron Maximen got in behind the Purton back line and smashed the ball past Kuczynski for 2-1.

That is how the score line stayed for half time.

Purton came out strong in the second half and created a number of chances, as did the home side.

But it was Purton who got the equaliser after a superb delivery from a free kick by Steve Keir that was met by a clinical finish from George Drewitt to make the scores 2-2 and that was how it stayed and extra time was required.

Wroughton took the upper hand within the first minute of extra time with a superb strike to make it 3-2.

Purton then reacted immediately with Chris Avery finishing well to equalise again for 3-3.

In the second half of extra time Wroughton sneaked ahead two minutes in to the restart making it 4-3.

They then caught Purton on the counter twice more as Purton pushed to pull it back, earning a flattering scoreline of 6-3.
