Joe Hughes lost his European title to British champion Robbie Davies jnr by unanimous decision in Liverpool on Sky Sports.

The decision appeared a harsh one on Hughes, with one judge scoring 118-110, in what was a closely contested fight.

Hughes, from Malmesbury, made a flying start to fight, busting Davies Jnr's nose early on.

The home fighter grew into the fight as he got on the front foot but it was an entertaining, well contested battle and the embrace and mutual respect shown by both competitors at the end emphasised that.

Davies Jnr was complimentary of his opponent after the fight.

He told Sky Sports: "Joe Hughes, what a competitor.

"I knew he was good but when you're actually in there with him, it's a different ball game. He's like a pit bull."
