Cirencester 4

Barnstaple 1

Cirencester Town stretched their winning run to four games as Aidan Bennett’s brace helped them victory over bottom club Barnstaple Town.

In a match that was supporting ‘The Big Yellow Bus Project’ with entry free for donations to be made to the project, The Centurions had to be patient against stubborn opponents and it took until the stroke of half-time for them to open the scoring but they finally put the game to bed with a late three goal blitz after Barnstaple had equalised around the hour mark.

Despite their lowly position in the league table Barnstaple started positively to win the a couple of early corner kicks and whilst Cirencester had plenty of possession they were finding it difficult to create any clear chances against a well organised defence but as the interval loomed a Louis Spalding cross from the left was met by the head of the Alan Griffin at the back post and the deadlock was broken.

As the hour mark approached the visitors equalised with a well taken goal as Nick Glover slid the ball to the right channel of the home penalty area for Harry Stevens to collect and score inside the left post.

Cirencester began to press and probe consistently and finally they were rewarded when Jack Freeman chased a ball to the by-line to supply Tommy Anderson and he laid it into the path of Ben Whitehead who drove it into the net.

The visitors barely had time to take stock when Bennett cut right from the left flank to fire home.

A minute later a neat move down the right flank resulted in a cross that reached Bennett to the left of the penalty spot and without hesitating he smashed it under the bar to round of the scoring.

Cirencester remain in fourth place in the Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South, four points behind third placed Moneyfields.

They’ve now lost just two of their last 12 games and have scored 20 goals in their last five matches.

Cirencester will travel to Paulton Rovers who are currently 16th in the league.

They will then host high-flying Yate Town on Saturday March 16 as the race for promotion hots up.
