Forest Green suffered back to back league defeats for the first time this season after Morecambe won late on at the New Lawn.

Aaron Wildig scored in the 86th minute of a game Rovers dominated.

Here are five things we learned from Saturday's game.

Need for a striker getting desperate

Rovers are starting to feel the loss of Christian Doidge after good early signs. Reuben Reid looked to have filled the void well but he’s since suffered an injury and often has his back to goal and tries to bring others into play. There have been a lot of chances that have come Forest Green’s way which had they fallen to a natural finisher, things could have been different. Reid has a good scoring record in League Two but he’s not quite a ‘poacher’ which is what Rovers lack. Someone who will just stay inside the box and gobble up goals.

Same problems continuing to haunt FGR

Forest Green have dominated most games, they’ve played slick football in most games and have missed chances in most game. They’ve often been punished for it and it happened again when Morecambe broke down the other end and took their opportunity late on. The build up play has been sublime at times but the final decision, pass or shot is where it seems to fall apart too often.

Rovers miss Grubb

Whether from the start or from the bench, Forest Green could have done with the winger against Morecambe. He is Forest Green’s top scorer with six goals so far and he could have offered something different against Morecambe.

George Williams started the game and did OK in patches but seems to have more of an impact from the bench so having Grubb available would have allowed Cooper to make that change but he had limited options on the bench due to Grubb’s injury.

Morecambe deployed game plan well

The Shrimps came with a game plan and deployed it perfectly. They were happy to allow Rovers to have the ball while they dropped into their shape and got men behind the ball. They defended resolutely, stayed in the game and took their chance when it came. Jim Bentley deserves credit for how he set up his team.

Archibald growing

Theo Archibald has had a recent run in the team and has been impressive. He’s quick, direct and put a lot of good crosses into the box on Saturday and was probably Rovers’ brightest player. He’s growing and improving with every game has proved effective.
