FORMER Oldham Athletic manager Richie Wellens has been installed as the early bookmakers’ favourite to be named as Swindon Town’s new manager.
Town are on the lookout for a new boss following chairman Lee Power’s decision to relieve Phil Brown of his duties last night.
The former Blackpool and Leicester City player is currently 1-3 on with bookmakers Bet Victor to be appointed as Brown’s successor.
Wellens has less than one full season of managerial experience to his name, having been at the helm at Oldham in League One for the majority of the 2017-18 campaign.
The 38-year-old was appointed at Boundary Park on a temporary basis last September and after guiding the Latics to a five-match unbeaten run, was handed the position on a full-time basis.
However, Oldham were not able to sustain that form for the remainder of the campaign and they were relegated from the third tier by a single point.
Wellens subsequently left the club over the summer in the wake of the Latics’ fall into League Two.
Former Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers manager Gary Bowyer is currently second favourite in the betting market at 8-1, with Darren Ferguson and Kevin Nolan both priced at 14-1.
