Thornbury Baptist's 3-2 Nailsea Churches

Bristol Churches League Cup Round 1

A double from Ben Paddy in the second half was enough to see Thornbury Baptist Church through in a game besieged by a fierce northerly wind which in itself disrupted as much of the football as any opposition intervention.

The visitors struck first when the Nailsea striker fired low inside Davis Newcombe’s near post. Jimmy Cooke equalised though on 30 minutes when he headed home a Sam Downes free-kick for Thornbury but then Baptists Manager Chris Beddoes was left disbelieving when his team failed to clear on the edge of the box and Nailsea fired home just seconds before the half-time whistle.

Thornbury responded with a much more imposing second half performance and both Steve Clare and Ben Ingram missed good chances to equalise before a miscued effort by Cooke allowed Aidan Maddox to collect in the box and he squared for Paddy who coolly avoided the keeper to slot home for 2-2.

Minutes later the move of the game saw Sam Nichols, Cooke and James Ponting exchanged passes through the midfield before Ponting rolled in Paddy arriving from the left-flank and firing home his second in the space of a few minutes and they held on for the win.
