There was plenty of action at Cirencester Golf Club over the past week with the Committee Cup, October Medal, Gloucestershire Seniors Scratch Foursomes salver.

The seniors also had their AGM. Here is a round of all the latest news from the club.

Committee Cup

Former Wilts and Glos Standard sports editor Danny Hall won his second trophy of the week when lifting the prestigious General Committee Cup at Cirencester Golf Club on Sunday.

Hall’s round may have lacked some of the fireworks of his Senior Bowmaker Salver win six days earlier, but it was a solid effort nonetheless, as he came home with 37 points.

The victory earned a one-hole handicap cut to 15.

The rules of the competition ensured that Hall could not also lift the Captain’s Cup, for the best-scoring current member of the committee. Instead that went to second-placed Jonathan Wells – 2017 holder of the Committee Cup – who knocked it around in 34 points, with two ‘blobs’.

Pete Stone, was cruising after three birdies on the front nine, but had to settle for third place with 34 points, and 2019 club captain Adam Collins finished fourth with 33.

October Medal

Owen Harrison, who won the Junior Club Championship (nett) back in May, showed he had progressed well since then when winning the October Medal at Cirencester Golf Club on Sunday.

Harrison’s scintillating nett 63, off 19, could have been even better as he double-bogeyed the last. But he managed to keep the lead on countback from fellow Division Three player Mark Pope (63 off 21), after which they have both had handicap cuts.

Craig Sutherland, who posted the lowest gross of the day with 71, had an exceptional nett 65 which was matched by James Stratton as they both romped to victory in Division One and Division Two respectively. Their scores earned them third and fourth place overall.

Despite the benign scoring conditions, only five twos were recorded from Sutherland, Pope, Hazelwood, Robin Rose and Jerry Homan-Green.

Sutherland’s two was for an eagle on the 7th hole.

RESULTS

Division One: Craig Sutherland (71-06-65); Lewis Flett (76-06-70); Hamish Mason (74-03-71); Gavin Allen (80-08-72).

Division Two: James Stratton (77-12-65); Clive Montgomery (81-11-70); Jack Harris (84-14-70); Bob Mills (82-12-70).

Division Three: Owen Harrison (82-19-63); Mark Pope (84-21-63); Chris Pollard (82-16-66); Steve Hazelwood (84-18-66)

Gloucestershire Seniors Scratch Foursomes Salver

Cirencester’s heroic run in the Gloucestershire Seniors Scratch Foursomes Salver for 2018 came to an end on Finals Day at the Knowle Golf Club in Bristol.

Having earned their place in the last four with a 2-1 victory over Cleeve Cloud, Cirencester were paired against Henbury in the opening morning semi-final but our rivals won through with the last putt on the 18th green.

In the afternoon’s 3rd/4th place play-off, Cirencester were runaway winners over Filton GC, and returned with a lovely cut glass vase for the trophy cabinet.

Seniors Mixed Open

The first Seniors Mixed Open ever played at Cirencester took place on beautiful autumnal day and attracted 76 players, 51 from ‘away’ clubs, including Tytherington in Cheshire.

The top prize went to visitors with Malcolm Sainsbury & Andrea Dawson from Naunton Downs topping the leaderboard with 48 points. They were followed home in the visitors’ section by Mike Simmonds & Sally Meek from Forest Hills (47pts) and Paul & Jackie McLaughlin from Chippenham (46pts).

The top-scoring home pair was ladies’ captain Kate Dymoke & Graham Clarke on 47 points, with Patrick & Christine Moylan runners-up in that section on 45.

Also among the prizes, as they were the only home and away player partnership, were Paul Horrell & Carol Walker (Westonbirt) with 36 points.

The raffle on the day raised £136 for the captain’s charity, the British Heart Foundation.

Seniors’ Bowmaker Salver

Earlier this century, Mike Margrave, now 82, and former Standard Sports Editor Danny Hall won the Gillman Salver.

The pair teamed up again to belatedly win some new silverware in the Seniors Bowmaker Salver on Monday, October 1, when they were ably assisted by Simon Embleton-Smith.

Hall laid the foundations in the competition where the best two scores (out of three) count on each hole, as he was just 2 over par after 12 holes.

When the 16-handicapper ran out of puff, Embleton-Smith happily took over the baton to see the trio home by four clear Stableford points with his fine back nine. Their total was 87 points. The runners-up were Martin Harrison, Jack Bastow and Paul Simmonds, who edged out Keith Hodgson, David Lowbridge and Andy Ponting on countback, both teams scoring 84 points. Emrys Williams, Robin Johnson and Graham Morgan were fourth on 82 points.
