Swindon’s performance at Gresty Road against Crewe Alexandra was a non-event. They produced probably even less chances than they did against Oldham, if that was possible, and succumbed to a very poor goal. This is normally a happy hunting ground for the Town, but not on this occasion, writes Peter Mitchell.

Up front Marc Richards and Elijah Adebayo were totally ineffective in the first half and seemed to want an age to deal with the few balls that came their way. Nevertheless Richards did have a couple of very good chances that he should have done a lot better with. Adebayo did slightly better later in the game, but this attacking partnership just isn’t working - and doesn’t look like working. Unfortunately, unless Kaine Woolery returns we seem to have few options to change things in attack, with Phil Brown having spent so much of his budget on midfielders.

After half-an-hour, and with Swindon’s defence all over the place, Charlie Kirk had lots of time to smack home what would prove to be Crewe’s winner.

Apart from conceding the one goal the Town defence looked reasonably solid with Sid Nelson having another good game. Having said that, on the hour mark, Luke McCormick made a magnificent diving block to keep Swindon in it, and further frustrate Lawrence Vigouroux’s chances of a recall.

Towards the end substitute Ellis Iandolo added a bit of zip to the proceedings. He came closest to scoring when he cut in from the right and struck the far post.

Wide man Keshi Anderson saw a lot of the ball, made a number of promising runs, but once again there was no end product. Similarly, impact player Jermaine McGlashan is having anything but.

So, we are a quarter of the way through the season (already) and Swindon are where I feared they would be – mid-table and looking mid-table.

Maybe things are drastic enough for Phil Brown to wear a suit different to his habitual blue one in an effort to change our luck. However, in all honesty, I don’t really think Swindon can blame bad luck at all for their indifferent start to the season. Interesting to see that our former striker Luke Norris is averaging a goal a game played for Colchester.

Saturday brings another struggling side, Northampton Town, to the County Ground. Let’s hope our attack shows up this time.
