BRIMSCOMBE & THRUPP boss Sam Prior insists his team are good enough to be at the top end of the table, writes Paul Joannou.

His side made it three wins in a row in all competitions with an impressive 3-1 victory at league leaders Ascot United.

Prior's side stormed into a 3-1 lead within 63 minutes thanks to goals from Sam Blackie, Jack Horell and Ollie Pitt.

They are now third, four points off top spot with two games in hand over Ascot.

Prior said: "I'm delighted, absolutely delighted. We had 12 players and me on the bench, but hopefully we're getting over the worst.

"It was a good solid performance, we took our chances and scored some really good goals and defended well, which was great considering that's the one area I wanted to improve.

"It's good to get that confidence to go to top of the league and get a win.

"We haven't set target as not reaching one can have a negative impact. The team are good enough to be at the top end, but time will tell if it is good enough to win a title, but anything below Saturday's performance is now not acceptable, they've raised the bar."

Brimscombe are now without a league game until October 6 as they turn their focus to cup action at  home to Cinderford tonight and away at Pewsey on Saturday.

Prior added: "It's a frustrating time of year. We went on a 14 game unbeaten run a couple of years ago, but only won five league games. You want them to be league games, but once we get going hopefully we'll kick-on.

" We play Pewsey in the Challenge Cup on Saturday, it'll probably give us a chance to mix it up, but we'll be taking a first team. We want to win it, they're a league below us but we won't be disrespecting them.

"In this competition we can play top sides like Bristol Rovers for example, so it's always good to pit yourself against better teams, so we'll give it a good crack."
