Bourton Rovers 4-2 Abingdon Town

Bourton Rovers climbed into second place in the Hellenic League Division Two West with victory over Abingdon Town.

Goals from Jake Oakey, Steve Nurse, Sam Mattock and Connor Teague helped seal their third win out of four games.

After dropping points last week against Wantage Town, Rovers needed a reaction at home to Abingdon.

Rovers changed their shape for the game and welcomed back Sam Mattock in the middle of the park.

The game started with Rovers dominating possession and creating some good early chances. However, in the 25th minute Abingdon scored with a strike that arrowed into the corner from 25 yards which left Simon Flower with no chance of stopping.

Rovers dusted themselves down and got straight back on the front foot again creating some good chances after good work from Steve Nurse and Danny Way. Their reward came in the 35th minute when Jake Oakey was played in and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper from close range.

Closely followed was Rovers second of the game after good work by the midfield who put in-form striker Nurse in who finished into the bottom corner from 12 yards.

The returning Mattock made it three with a powerful finish right on the stroke of half time.

The second half began with Rovers dominating the play and looking in total control until a defensive error was pounced on by Town and they made it 3 - 2 with 20 minutes to play.

A nervy 15 minutes followed with Town going close but Rovers also created a hatful of chances which weren’t put away.

Connor Teague then killed the game in the 88th minute with a nicely taken header from close range after smart work by Danny Way.

A good result in the end and a much improved performance after last weeks home defeat by Wantage Town.

Rovers host Abingdon Utd Development this coming Saturday at Rissington Road.

Elsewhere, Bourton Rovers Seconds opened their Witney and District Division one campaign with a convincing 5 - 1 away victory against Eynsham SSC.
