Swindon Town got an unexpected break last weekend – albeit coupled with a long and wasted trip – when their game at Accrington was called off two hours before kick-off.

So now we have to wait until Friday (Colchester United at home) to see what changes – if any – David Flitcroft might have introduced.

After two consecutive heavy home defeats at the beginning of the season (Crawley and Barnet) the Town defence has settled down and become much more reliable – principally since the acquisition of Matt Preston.

However, to me it still doesn’t look solid or stubborn enough for a side looking to be a strong and resilient promotion challenger. Whilst Matt Taylor is an excellent offensive wing back – we have lost count of the number of assists/scores he has to his name – I feel he has been caught out too often by the quicker and more direct attacker.

One way to give him more protection and give the Town defence more robustness generally, might be to play three central defenders (instead of two) so that there is an extra man in the middle to help on the flanks.

Ben Purkiss would be worth a try in this role with Kyle Knoyle then filling in at right wing back. Apparently, the manager did indulge in some sort of experimenting last time out - in the defeat against Forest Green – but Purkiss was rested and didn’t figure in that game.

With Swindon having now lost four on the bounce – shipping 10 goals in the process – tweaking of some description is called for. The other interesting selection conundrum is whether Lawrence Vigouroux remains in between the sticks or does Reice Charles-Cook, who has done very little wrong, get a recall?

At least this Friday’s match should be more interesting than late night shopping….
