CHILDREN from Powell’s C of E primary school in Cirencester showed their support for a road safety campaign by designing cycle helmets.

The theme of Road Safety Week this year was about everyone, especially drivers, showing patience, consideration and responsibility towards other road users.

Organised by Brake, the campaign urged drivers to protect people on foot and bike by slowing down to 20mph in residential areas, going slower at junctions and bends, and giving people plenty of room.

Law firm Davey Law, which has an office in Cirencester, was involved in raising awareness of road safety and awarded £10 book tokens for the winning helmet design in each of the six KS1 classes at Powell’s.

Sarah Bayes, early years teacher at the school, said: “Seeing the children’s designs and choosing the winners has been good fun, but the main aspect of this activity was to get our pupils thinking about their own safety on and around roads. The cycle helmets represent just one important element of staying safe.”

Every child in the school received a fluorescent snap band to wear on their wrist to make them more visible in the dark.

Peter Davies, personal injury specialist and senior partner at Davey Law in Cirencester, said: “The theme for Road Safety Week was to ‘look out for each other’ and we thought providing the children with a high-vis snap band would be helpful in making them more visible but also more aware of the need to take care,”

The winning cycle helmets are being displayed in Davey Law’s office window in Dollar Street, Cirencester.
