Completion I am very interested to read Mrs Mary Bartlett’s letter (Standard, May 4) which must be supported.

Mary was a very strong pillar of support with the former ‘Pop-In’ a few years ago and when John her husband was Mayor in the eighties she was again a great support to his office term and Cirencester.

The Town Council has done a big service and a good job to Cirencester in the restoration of the Market Place. Market Places were never intended to be car parks and bus stops, but open places for the provision of harvests and events such as the recent ‘First Fleece Fayre’. But, the council never completed their task and this now requires completion.

Firstly, the council made good provision for a taxi rank to replace those taxi places the council dispensed with. The five places were being well used when I stood outside the Corn Hall to view the scene. The remaining five places outside the two banks should now be clearly marked on the road paving as Blue Badge disable places. This will replace those the council dispensed with, but did not replace when attending to its taxi rank needs.

Secondly, there is no need for any double decker buses, coaches or HGV and lorries to drive or stop along Dollar Street, West Market Place, the Market Place and onto the entrance to Dyer Street.

This practise must be stopped forthwith and vehicles barred. HGV’s and lorries must complete their drop off and deliveries by 9-9.30am latest and not allow re-commencement until the next day.

Thirdly, Cricklade Street. All deliveries and drop offs by HGV’s and big vehicles should be carried out and completed during early morning by 9-9.30am very latest, after that time barred until the next day. Motorcycles also barred.

The needs of the chemist, florist, baker and other small local companies must be catered for and allowed at any time of day or evening.

The street is for small vehicles and cars only. Blue badge holders must be catered for and allowed at any time of the day.

Their needs are of prime importance and must be allowed.

I am sure the above observations will not suit everybody, but will help meet the needs of blue badge holders and small traders on Cricklade Street and West Market Place.

Some traders will have to arrange their goods delivery services for an early morning start and finish.

It’s important that people are catered for as a whole, and for disabled folk in particular.

The council have come in for a lot of stick in your newspaper about the Market Place and its unfinished state.

The job wants completing and the council needs to reply to the published letters.

The Market Place is a job well done and money well spent. It wanted this to be done years ago.
