RE-A419 ROAD closure: what a wasted opportunity:

Can I draw your readers’ attention to your article on page five of the Standard (April 14) regarding the road closures to the A417 and A419 that are expected to cause major disruption for extensive maintenance works.

I am a member of A419 NAG (Noise Action Group) and we are seeking to achieve redress for the excessive noise that the concrete road surface produces.

This is a health hazard and the traffic volumes, particularly for commercial vehicles, are increasing each year.

The Standard has been very supportive of A419 NAG’s actions and will be aware of the representations we continue to make to DEFRA and Highways England via our local MPs and the county and district councils etc.

But is the suggested programme of repairs a ‘Missed Opportunity’ to achieve a longer lasting and more beneficial solution?

There is an area of the dual carriageway between Cricklade and Latton which was recently resurfaced with ‘velvet’ tarmac that has instantly reduced the road noise dramatically, so that is a real result.

If this works, then why cannot more of the concrete surface be replaced now in a similar material to help reduce this long term nuisance?
