The UK government has updated its travel advice to UK travellers following a terrorist-related incident in the Spanish city of Algeciras.
The Foreign Office has alerted Brits heading to Spain that "terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks" following an incident on January 25.
In its latest guidance, it informed travellers: "On 25 January 2023, there was a terrorist-related incident where a man carrying a machete attacked two churches in the southern Spanish city of Algeciras, in Cadiz, resulting in injuries and the loss of one life.."
According to local media, one person died and several people were injured after a suspect, who has been arrested, attacked churchgoers with wielded a machete or a samurai sword.
Spanish police have raided the suspect's home to “determine the nature, terrorist or otherwise”, of Wednesday night’s horror, according to Interior minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska.
Mr Grande-Marlaska has said that no one else was involved and the detainee has no criminal record.
The suspect is still being questioned and had been under a Spanish deportation order since last June, The Interior Ministry has said.
UK travellers were also warned that terrorist attacks" could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners".
It added: "The Spanish authorities take measures to protect visitors, but you should be vigilant and follow the instructions of the local authorities".
