Police say it was a "miracle" that dangerous driver Zachary Abba did not knock down a pedestrian.

He has been given a suspended prison sentence for dangerous driving that put the public in Royal Wootton Bassett at risk.

On 23 May this year, officers responded to community information provided regarding Abba driving whilst disqualified.

His grey Seat Ibiza was spotted leaving the Aldi car park in Royal Wootton Bassett, and entering Swindon Road.

When officers made attempts to block the vehicle, Abba evaded capture, while driving on the wrong side of the road, in the direction of Hook.

Abba exceeded the speed limit, hitting speeds of 80mph, and continued to drive on the wrong side of the road and took the Coped Hall roundabout the wrong way.

The car was later found dumped on School Lane and Abba was arrested later the same month.

PC Luke Hobbs of Wiltshire Police's Roads Policing Unit said: "Abba showed a complete disregard for the law, not only driving whilst disqualified but his manner of driving when police pursued him.

“It is a miracle that his actions didn’t lead to an innocent member of the public being involved in a road traffic collision that could have had awful consequences.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to the member of public who alerted us to Abba driving whilst disqualified and just highlights how importance this support of the community can be to ensure these sentences are upheld.

“Hopefully, with a custodial sentence now hanging over his head, Abba will think twice about getting behind the wheel of a vehicle whilst disqualified.”

The 26-year-old of Brooklands, Brinkworth, Chippenham, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified and without insurance at Swindon Magistrates’ Court.

He was sentenced on Friday (June 25) to 9 months in prison, suspended for 18 months, was disqualified from driving for five years and must undergo another driving test before he can legally drive again. He must also carry out 100 hours unpaid work, undertake rehabilitation activities and pay a victim surcharge.

If you are suspicious of someone driving dangerously or whilst disqualified, then please call 101 and give as much information as possible, including the driver's details or description and their car registration.
