RETIRED Cirencester College principal Nigel Robbins will stand as a Liberal Democrat candidate for Cirencester in the local elections this spring.

Mr Robbins, who retired in December after 20 years leading the college, confirmed his move into politics saying he would stand for the Beeches ward.

Mr Robbins, awarded an OBE for services to education, chose the ward because of his links to Kingshill School.

He said: "Retirement has given me the opportunity to pursue the great interest I have always had in politics and social issues. I look forward to bringing together those interests in progressive causes and my affection for Cirencester."

Lib Dem opposition leader at Cotswold District Council, Paul Hodgkinson, said the party was "delighted" about the decision.

He said: "His vast experience in education and public life will be an invaluable contribution to CDC."

The closest issue to Mr Robbins' heart is the serious problems faced by young people. He added: "They are being burdened with significant debt, reduction in job opportunities, lack of affordable housing, rising mental health and addiction problems, an environment under threat, an ageing population they will be expected to support, and poorer public services. There is much to do."
