MOTORISTS faced major disruption today after a section of the M5 was shut while two footbridges were demolished.

The motorway is closed in both directions between junction 11 for the A40 and junction 12 for the A38, including junction 11A, until 6am on Monday.

National Highways is demolishing the deteriorating Uphill Court and Grove Court footbridges, which it says must be removed before they become a hazard.

Hardwicke-photographer Paul Nicholls captured the dramatic demolition work as the structures came tumbling down.

Drivers are being diverted along the A38, A40 and A417 and have been urged to follow diversion signs rather than sat-navs.

National Highways warned the diversion routes were expected to be busy and advised motorists to travel only if necessary or consider different times.

Further disruption is affecting the surrounding road network.

The A40 at Over Bridge near Gloucester is reduced to one lane in each direction with a 30mph limit and is experiencing delays.

Ongoing works are also taking place on the A417 between Gloucester and Cirencester, adding another potential complication for motorists travelling through the area.
