A MAJOR route will close for almost two weeks amid fears part of the road could collapse with cracks discovered along the carriageway.
Cracks have been found along the A419 at Cowcombe Hill, near Chalford, with works to be undertaken to prevent the road from collapsing.
Gloucestershire County Council said ground movement had affected the route for several years.
The road will close from Tuesday, September 29, to Friday, October 9, 2026, for ground investigations.
Highways previously said it was going to carry out extensive geotechnical work to prevent the road from collapsing down the hill.
The county council is also carrying out more surveys before finalising plans to stabilise the hillside.
Mark Harris, cabinet member for highways, said: "Cowcombe Hill is a vital route for local communities in the Stroud area and for people travelling across Gloucestershire.
"Ongoing ground movement means we need to take action to protect this important section of the network and reduce the risk of further deterioration."
Engineers have monitored and surveyed the hillside for several years to assess the risks and find a long-term fix.
The council said the closure will allow engineers to collect vital data before and during winter.
The findings will help shape the final stabilisation plan.
A Gloucestershire County Council spokesperson said: "To carry out the work safely, the road will close from September 29 to October 9, 2026.
"We will continue to work with residents, businesses and stakeholders to minimise disruption wherever possible and provide advance notice of traffic management arrangements."
Concerns from local stakeholders and commoners delayed the start of the main construction work.
The council changed its timetable after concerns about construction disrupting cattle grazing in spring and summer.
The main works are now due to start in November 2027, subject to the final design and approvals.
The council said the change balances highway maintenance with the needs of the community and land users.
Mr Harris said: "We understand temporary closures are inconvenient and thank residents, businesses and road users for their patience during these investigations.
"The information gathered will help us finalise a long-term solution and make the route more reliable for years to come.
"We've also listened to local stakeholders and commoners concerned about construction affecting cattle grazing.
"By revising the programme, we're balancing the needs of the highway network with those of the local community."
The Cowcombe Hill scheme will stabilise the hillside, protect the A419 from further damage and improve the route's long-term reliability, says the council.
The project is designed to support residents, businesses, and visitors by maintaining a safe and dependable road connection.
The council will keep residents updated on future works and traffic arrangements as plans are confirmed.
