A FOOTBALL team from Cirencester has won a national cup following a stellar performance.
After four rounds of wins, Beeches Pilgrims FC were victorious when they played in the final of the National Christian Trophy in Hertfordshire on Monday, May 4.
The National Christian Trophy competition is a UK-wide contest for clubs connected with local churches from across the country.
Playing in the opposition were the winners from the north of England, Armley Christ Church from Leeds in West Yorkshire.
In front of an enthusiastic crowd of supporters from Cirencester and Leeds, the two teams shook hands, a prayer was offered and the whistle sounded.
The Cirencester lads scored 16 minutes in.
At the stroke of half time, they scored two more goals, leaving the Beeches Pilgrims in the driving seat 3-0 at the break.
12 minutes into the second half, the Yorkshire opposition got one back.
But before the final whistle, the Cirencester lads’ hard work paid off with another goal, meaning they were cruising at 4-1.
There were great celebrations as the referee blew his whistle.
Friends and family travelled to the Hemel Hempstead Town football ground in Hertfordshire for the game.
The giant cup and medals were making their way home to Cirencester as of Tuesday, May 5.
Beeches Pilgrims FC’s team is made up of male players from Cirencester playing under the banner of Cirencester Pilgrims FC, supported by Cirencester Baptist Church in Chesterton Lane.
They are also connected with The Golden Farm pub in Cirencester’s Upper Churnside.
