THE Big Malmesbury Clothes Swap is returning this spring.
Following the success of its first event in October 2024, the community initiative will take place on Saturday, April 26, at Malmesbury Town Hall.
The event, organised by volunteers and the social welfare charity HEALS of Malmesbury, aims to promote sustainable fashion by encouraging people to swap clothes instead of buying new ones.
Florence Yu, a volunteer and parent governor, said: "With the significant impact of clothing waste, it’s crucial we find sustainable alternatives in how we choose, wear, and dispose of clothes.
"As a parent governor at a secondary school, I’m especially keen to involve teenagers in this movement — encouraging them to protect the planet in any way they can."
"Fashion can be a powerful entry point," she said.
"Through the clothes swap, we aim to raise awareness of environmental issues, foster social responsibility in the next generation, and make fashion fun and accessible without spending money."
The event is open to everyone, even those who do not have clothes to swap.
HEALS trustee Liz Cook said: "Everyone is welcome — even if you don’t bring anything to swap.
"All items are completely free – our main goal is to encourage people to give their clothing a second life."
The event will also feature styling rails curated by Jenny Garcia, a former head of buying at Topshop, to show how pre-loved pieces can be styled to look current.
People are invited to donate good-quality women’s, men’s, and teen clothing from now until the event day.
Donations can be dropped off at the Tourist Information Centre in Malmesbury Town Hall or the big Co-op in Malmesbury.
All clothes will be sorted and displayed for swapping on the day.
There is no entry fee, and everyone is welcome.
Voluntary donations are appreciated to support the future work of HEALS of Malmesbury and other sustainability-related activities.
The event highlights the urgent need for sustainable fashion, given that the UK has one of the highest rates of clothing consumption in Europe.
The average Briton buys 26.7kg of clothing per year, nearly double that of Germany.
