AN URGENT warning has been issued about unlicensed puppy breeders by a charity in the Dursley area.

Cotswolds Dogs and Cats Home - based in Cambridge near Slimbridge - has recently welcomed four Labrador puppies as part of an ongoing investigation.

According to staff, each puppy needed medical attention when they arrived at the charity and all four were "nervous," "dirty," and "unwell."

However, the puppies now have a bright future ahead of them and have been named Patrick, Clover, Orla and Guinness.

They have been described as a “fabulous four” who are “gorgeous bundles of joy” and are full of “hope and love”.

The charity has now urged all pet owners and families to research breeders before buying animals or to think about adopting.

A CDCH spokesperson said: “Unlicensed puppy breeding is deeply concerning and reflects a troubling trend where profit is taking precedence over the welfare of animals.

“If you were looking to add a puppy into your family, we would always recommend researching breeds that meet your lifestyle and look at rehoming or choosing a licensed breeder that promotes responsible breeding, prioritises animal welfare and ensures healthier and responsibly bred pups.

“A responsible breeder should always let you at least meet the puppies mother if not both parents.

They added: “Despite all the fun and joy that comes with having puppies at the centre, there is a significant amount of time and care needed which comes at a cost.

“All the pups along with their care will require routine veterinary treatment including vaccinating, flea & worming, microchipping, and neutering.

“This alone will cost around £800 for each pup, a total of £3200.

“As a small charity the cost of providing these essential services is a substantial amount of money.

“Your support will make a real difference in the lives of these innocent puppies.

“By contributing towards their care, you are not only giving them a second chance at life but also supporting our ongoing vision to combat the cruelty of irresponsible puppy breeding.

“Together, we can give them the love, care, and brighter future they deserve.”
