An incident on the M4 has caused heavy traffic as the road has been closed overnight.

The M4 between Junction 14 near Hungerford and Junction 15 near Swindon was closed at around 10pm on Sunday, January 7.

The incident which has closed the motorway overnight has been described as an incident by Wiltshire Police and National Highways.

A National Highways spokesperson said on Sunday night: "At approximately 21.46pm we were advised of a serious incident resulting in the closure of the M4 in both directions between J15 and J14.

"Thames Valley Police are leading a multi-agency response to the incident. National Highways resources are assisting with traffic management.

"Due to the serious nature of the incident, the road is expected to remain closed through the night."

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police wrote on the Swindon Police Facebook account and said on late on Sunday: “Drivers please be aware that we have closed the M4 eastbound at junction 15 (Swindon) due to a serious collision in the Thames Valley neighbouring area.”

The incident caused heavy traffic on the M4 Eastbound on the approach to the closure as well as along the A346 between Marlborough and the M4 Junction 15 roundabout.
