AN archaeological dig, an Anglo-Saxon picnic and a carnival procession are just a few events that will take place in Malmesbury in the new year to celebrate a special anniversary.

A team of enthusiast volunteers from various organisations across the town - such as Athelstan Museum, Malmesbury Town Council and Malmesbury Town Team - have planned a jam-packed programme of events to celebrate the 1100th anniversary since Athelstan became King.

The town has a rich history with the first King of England who chose to be buried at Malmesbury Abbey.

One of the main events that has been organised to mark this historic event is Malmesbury’s Big Athelstan Dig which will take place on the first weekend of July (6th and 7th).

Visitors will get the chance to follow an exciting trail and meet professional archaeologists who will help interpret their finds.

On July 13 and 14 a live multi-media performance will take place at Malmesbury Abbey which will tell the story of how Athelstan became the first King of England.

Meanwhile, on the same weekend, a Big Athelstan picnic will be held in the Cloister Gardens behind the Abbey as well as a craft fair.

Residents will also get the chance to see a re-enactment of Athelstan’s Anglo-Saxon warriors in action in Malmesbury’s river-side park at St Aldhelm’s Mead on July 20 and 21.

Between May and October 2024 an exhibition at Athelstan Museum, an Athelstan themed Malmesbury Carnival Procession, an Athelstan and Anglo-Saxon focused Wessex Week have also been organised.

Leader of the Athelstan 1100 project Campbell Ritchie said: "Malmesbury has a rich and rewarding heritage that is the backbone of our economy and culture.

"Athelstan’s national importance and his focus on our town, his gifts, and the inspiration he drew from this community is worth celebrating and it creates a moment to show how proud we all of our home.”

Mayor of Malmesbury Gavin Grant said: "Malmesbury is really getting behind Athelstan 1100.

"It is great to see so many groups and individuals working together with more becoming involved as plans progress.

“The early support of Malmesbury Town Council, Mindvision, Cotswold Archaeology, Scott Media and the Warden and Freemen of Malmesbury is much appreciated by the project team.

"There are lots of opportunities for local businesses and residents to get directly involved so we really maximise the benefit of this important anniversary and Athelstan’s relationship with Malmesbury for our residents and visitors.”
