INFORMATION about the by-election for the vacant Lechlade, Kempsford and Fairford seat has been announced.

Cotswold District Council announced yesterday (Wednesday, November 8) that Cllr Clare Muir has resigned from her seat due to personal reasons.

This has triggered a by-election which has been scheduled to take place on Thursday, December 14.

Anyone who wishes to put themselves forward as a candidate for the vacancy will need to submit a nomination paper to the returning officer at Cotswold District Council by 4pm on Friday, November 17.

Nomination papers are available on the CDC website.

CDC has urged residents in the area to make sure they are registered to vote by Tuesday, November 28 so that they can take part in this election.

New postal voters will need to register by 5pm on Wednesday, November 29 and those wishing to use a proxy vote by 5pm on Wednesday, December 6.

Residents who wish to vote by post or at the polling station have been reminded to provide identification, such as a driving licence or a passport, following new laws introduced by the government this year.

Poll cards will be sent to all individuals registered to vote ahead of the election which will contain information on polling stations and the ID they are required to bring.

Robert Weaver, returning officer at CDC, said: “Taking part in local democracy is important and I would encourage all residents of the Lechlade, Kempsford and Fairford South ward to register to vote and take part in the by-election.

“I would also recommend people make sure they get registered, apply for a postal or proxy vote as soon as possible so they don't miss out on their chance to vote.

“Also residents need to check they have the correct ID so that they can vote in-person or register for postal or proxy votes.”
