GRIEVING parents have raised money for a defibrillator in Cirencester after their beloved son died suddenly at the age of just 38.

Dad-of-three Daniel Berry, who lived in Fairford and was affectionately known as Bez, died in October last year.

After the incident it transpired that he had an enlarged heart which contributed towards his death.

His parents Len and Di - who have transformed their front garden in North Home Road, Cirencester into a shrine to Daniel - described him as the 'life and soul of every room' and someone who 'loved to help others'.

It was his willingness to help others that inspired them to keep his memory alive by raising money for a defibrillator, which has just been installed in the garden at a cost of £2,500.

Around £700 was donated by family and friends and the rest was paid for by Len and Di.

It is attached to the front of the house by the memorial garden which is adorned with flowers, pictures and loving quotes including 'You only get one life, get out there and live it'.

The defibrillator is the centrepiece and next to it are step-by-step instructions.

Two Mini Cooper plant pots have been filled with an array of yellow, purple, and orange flowers to acknowledge Daniel's enduring love of cars.

Daniel grew up in the area and attended Cirencester Primary School and Kingshill Secondary.

He was infatuated with cars from a young age and Len fondly remembers Daniel watching intently as a boy when anyone was working on a car.

A tyre fitter, Daniel worked in several garages in the area including South Cerney Tyres and ETB Autocentres tyre shop in Cirencester.

His parents helped him set up his own tyre fitting company DB Tyres which was based in a unit near Common Hill in Cricklade.

Len explained that his son loved to help others and would often rescue drivers in the early hours of the morning who had become stuck with a punctured tyre.

"Daniel had my silly sense of humour and would always pull practical jokes," said Len.

"He was the life and soul of every room and always saw the funny side of life.

"He loved helping other people, so we wanted to get a defibrillator in his name so he could continue to help people.

"We hope no one needs to use it but we want people to know it is here just in case."

Di said: "When we first found out about Daniel's death the feeling was indescribable, I felt numb.

"You just never expect your kids to go before you do.

"Daniel was well-loved in the community, more than 300 people attended his funeral.

"We would like to thank everyone for their generous donations and thank the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity for helping us get the defibrillator and the electrician from Crown Electrical Services for setting it up.

"I have decorated the garden to honour his memory and it is where I now talk to Daniel.

"I see like this, although Daniel's heart stopped, this defibrillator will allow someone else's to continue."

The defibrillator can be found on wall of house in 142 North Home Road, Cirencester in the front garden.
