A SPEEDING driver has been banned from the roads after being caught going more than 130mph on the M4 near Swindon.

Vasile Lucut appeared at Swindon Magistrates Court earlier this week and pleaded guilty to one charge of speeding.

Roads Policing Unit officers noticed the 26-year-old from Bridgwater in Somerset racing between junctions 16 and 17 of the motorway just after midnight on September 20.

They clocked him going at 108mph but when the police vehicle caught up with his blue BMW 730D, he had reached speeds of up to 136mph.

Police pulled him over and charged him for driving at excess speed in a 70mph limit.

Lucut has now been disqualified from driving for 60 days, fined £700, and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £280 as well as court costs of £85.

PC Steve Harding of the Roads Policing Unit said: “At almost double the speed limit, this was an absurd speed to be driving at.

“Lucut is incredibly fortunate that he wasn’t involved in a collision with another vehicle, road furniture or debris as it would’ve resulted in almost certain severe injury or death.

“At those kinds of speeds, there is almost no time to react should something unexpected happen.

“Hopefully the disqualification and fine will make him reflect on the manner of his driving and not do it again.”
