A man has died after getting into difficulty while swimming in a Cotswold lake - as temperatures hit 34 degrees Celsius in the area.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Ashton Keynes, at around 6pm on Monday evening.

The man, in his 20s, was reportedly swimming with a group of friends in Lake 26 when he go into difficulty and drowned.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said it sent three fire crews to the scene after being called to the incident by the Coastguard.

A spokesperson said: "At 6.05pm yesterday evening, we received a call from the Coastguard about an incident on Whitefriars Lane, Ashton Keynes.

"Crews from Malmesbury and Cricklade were mobilised along with Cirencester - a male casualty was already out of the water on our arrival so no rescue was required."

Wiltshire Air Ambulance landed nearby, but despite the efforts of first responders, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement, Wiltshire Police said: "A man has sadly died following an incident at Cotswold Water Park, Ashton Keynes.

"We were called to the scene shortly after 6pm yesterday.

"Sadly, a man in his 20s was confirmed deceased shortly after being pulled from the water.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this tragic time. We are not treating his death as suspicious."

South Western Ambulance Service confirmed it sent numerous resources to the incident.

A spokesperson said: "We were called at 18.07hrs on Monday 18 July to an incident in Ashton Keynes and sent an operations officer, two double-crewed land ambulances and an air ambulance".

Swimming is not permitted in any lakes at Cotswold Water Park other than those specifically operated for open water swimming.

These are: Lake 32 Outdoor Centre, Cotswold Water Park Hire (Lake 86) and 4 Lakes. 

There is a large inland paddling and bathing beach at Cotswold Country Park and Beach.
