A Cirencester road is so littered with potholes that to drive along it is “like being on safari”, according to councillors.

Dozens of residents have signed a petition calling on Gloucestershire County Council to resurface Victoria Road.

County councillors Joe Harris and Rebecca Halifax presented the petition to highways and flood cabinet member Vernon Smith at Wednesday’s (May 18) full council meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Harris said: “To resurface Victoria Road which is a residential road but a very busy main road through central Cirencester.

“It’s fair to say that driving over it at the minute is a bit like being on safari. There are that many potholes, so residents hope to get it resurfaced.”

Danger to pedestrians as drivers swerve to avoid potholes

Cllr Halifax said residents were badly let down last autumn because scheduled resurfacing work for the road was not done.

“This caused a great deal of consternation all round. The work was booked in last year, the workforce showed up but nothing happened.

“It’s not just overdue, it’s egregiously overdue. There are many near misses with pedestrians because people swerve around potholes.

“It’s a road that has exponential danger attached to it because the surface is poor. Getting the work done is super important.”

The petition reads: “The road surface on Victoria Road is littered with potholes causing problems for motorists and cyclists.

“Driving down the road is more like being on safari than being in the capital of the Cotswolds.”
