A road near Malmesbury is back open after a huge fly tip was cleared.

Numerous large items were found dumped on the road through the village of Garsdon on Tuesday morning.

Garden waste, items of clothing and a fridge-freezer all had to be cleared to make the road passable again.

Wiltshire Council are now appealing for information.

Cllr Dr Mark McClelland, cabinet member for street scene, said: “This fly tip had been reported to us and the police were made aware.

"Our contractors went out yesterday and cleared the fly tip immediately.

“We are continuing to investigate and if anyone has any information regarding this fly tip, please contact the council via the MyWilts app or online at wiltshire.gov.uk/mywilts-online-reporting."

The council is also reminding residents of their responsibility in checking who they give their waste to and warning that they could be fined if their waste is dumped and they failed to carry out 'reasonable checks' beforehand.

“Clearing fly tips is a huge drain on our resources and finances," said Cllr McClelland.

"Many fly tipping incidents occur when people give or pay a third party to dispose of their waste, either a rogue trader carrying out work at their property, a ‘man and a van’ or those advertising tip runs on social media.

"We would urge people to check the credentials of anyone they give or pay to dispose of their waste and always ensure their waste is only transferred to authorised persons (this includes garden and tree works waste).

"Householders and businesses can be issued a fixed penalty notice (£400) or prosecuted if their waste has been fly tipped and reasonable checks have not been conducted on those who collect their waste.

“By checking and ensuring you only use authorised persons to dispose of your waste you will avoid a fine and help save us time and money.”
