Police will be carrying out targeted patrols in Cirencester in an attempt to tackle the town's joyriding issue.

Furious residents had called on the police to do something about the 'mindless' joyriders keeping them awake at night.

On multiple occasions in the last month, neighbours on the southern edge of the town have been disturbed by noisy, fast cars.

The incidents have occurred on the roundabout where Wilkinson Road, Spratsgate Lane and Somerford Road meet, and also in nearby Love Lane.

As many as six cars have been spotted at once, with the incidents going on as late as 11.30pm.

The roundabout was only built last year, as part of the Chesterton development, but has now been damaged.

One resident, who lives nearby, said: "The carefully turfed and finished roundabout has been destroyed.

"Many of the local residents were disturbed by this.

"The joyriders used what will be the entrance to the new development to gain speed and rev their engines to mount the roundabout."

Video footage seen by the Standard shows a number of cars doing doughnuts around the roundabout while photos of the aftermath show damage to the roundabout and road surface and knocked over traffic cones.

Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "It might be fun for them. They obviously think they are very clever.

"They are just destructive.

"It goes on so late. We have an elderly neighbour. It is a worry.

"We need somebody to do something about it."

A spokesperson for Gloucestershire Police said: "Police have received a number of reports regarding anti-social driving in the Love Lane, Industrial Park area of Cirencester.

"Neighbourhood Policing Officers are aware and will be doing targeted patrols in the area around the time of complaints to help tackle the issue."
