A Cirencester takeaway say they have lost trade as a result of roadworks outside their shop.

Thames Water is carrying out 'critical' work on the corner of Queen Street and Watermoor Road.

From January 10-21 there is no access to Watermoor Road for vehicles, with a temporary fence put up in front of shops on the road - including Watermoor Fish and Chips.

"We have been very quiet over the last two days because of the barriers that extend all along the road," a spokesperson for the takeaway said.

"We have lost trade and customers over this issue.

"I understand that it needed to be done but if we were told about this situation, we would have closed for the week to save us the stress of having no trade."

"We receive no warning or letter that this would be happening.

While businesses claim they were not given advanced warning, Thames Water says residents were informed.

A spokesperson said: "We sent letters to residents and advanced warning road signs were in place two weeks before the work started.

"We’re carrying out essential work relining the sewer located on the junction of Queen Street and Watermoor Road.

"This is to help prevent high volumes of groundwater entering public sewers.

"There is a road closure in place meaning access on Queen Street will be temporarily limited. There will be no access to Watermoor Road for vehicles and a diversion route is in place.

"Access to customer property and businesses will be maintained.

"We’re sorry for any convenience caused while we carry out this essential work."

The work is being carried out as part of Thames Water's Groundwater Infiltration Reduction Scheme, to prevent high volumes of groundwater entering public sewers.

A letter sent out by Thames Water about the work states: "The road closure will mean access on Queen Street will be temporarily limited.

"There will be no access to Watermoor Road for vehicles. There will be a diversion route in place.

"We will have contractor vehicles on site so you may notice an increase in traffic movement in the area on certain days. While we carry out these essential works, please be aware there may be a slight odour and some noise present."
