A LORRY carrying hay bales caught fire on the M4 in Wiltshire last night.

Two lanes on the M4 remain closed this morning after the blaze.

Highways South West tweeted at 7am that two of the lanes remain closed on the westbound carriageway at Junction 17 (Chippenham) whilst recovery work is carried out.

The fire service stayed at the scene for several hours last night "as the load kept reigniting" and it was unsafe to run traffic past the scene.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, who attended the fire, shared an image of the fire via social media this morning (Tuesday, January 11), after the fire had been put out and crews had left the scene.

They said: "This was the M4 late last night following the fire involving a trailer laden with hay bales. The fire is now out & our crews have left the scene."

Highways South West have advised motorists to allow extra time for their journey.
