POLICE closed the M4 near Swindon after a woman died.

Emergency calls came in at 5.30am about the 19-year-old who fell from a bridge and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are not treating the death as suspicious at this stage. A spokesman for the force said: "We regret to report that a woman has died this morning on the M4.

"Her family have been informed and are receiving support from specially trained officers. Our thoughts are with her family and friends and this tragic time."

The motorway closed between Junctions 15 and 16 on Sunday while police investigated the scene. Croft Road in Wroughton shut after police were called but reopened to traffic at 10am.

The eastbound carriageway reopened at around 11.15am but the westbound one is expected to remain closed for some time.

The police spokesman added: "We’d like to speak urgently to any drivers of vehicles that were travelling on the M4, particularly those on the westbound carriageway, between 5.15am and 5.30am who may have seen something or have dash cam footage that could assist officers with their investigations. Please call us on 101 and quote log 85 of December 5."
