A 79-year-old woman will walk on the wings of an aeroplane in the skies near Cirencester on Friday for her 80th Birthday.

Johanna Hamer, from Cheltenham, is taking off from Rendcomb Airfield to raise money for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, the Air Ambulance Service and Linc.

“Everyone thinks I am nuts, but I am not sure it is the nuttiest thing I have ever done in my life," said Johanna, who held a pilot licence for most her life and regularly flew planes from Gloucester Airport.

"I used to take aerobatic flying lessons with a friend and he once flew me upside down along the M5.”

She explained how in her 70s, she abseiled down the walls of Pembrokeshire Castle for charity.

She continued: “I have always quite fancied wing walking as it is something so different and I felt now was as good a time as any to do it while I am still fit enough.

“I have lost many dear friends and family members in recent years and it has really made me think. You have to do things while you can and you must make the best of life.”

As well as raising money through her wing walk, Johanna is throwing a birthday bash in July for friends and family and instead of birthday gifts, she is asking guests to make donations to her chosen charities.

“I chose to raise funds for Sue Ryder as I felt it is such a wonderful charity which supports so many people when they really need it.

“The hospice supported by friend’s son recently at the end of his life. I really believe Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice is one of the nicest places to be.”

Johanna said she might do a loop-the-loop on the wing walk depending on how much breakfast she has before.
