The first cases of the Indian variant in the Cotswolds and Wiltshire have been detected by Public Health England.

The agency recorded 15 cases in Wiltshire and between one and four cases in the Cotswolds up until June 2, meaning Wiltshire has the fifth highest number of cases in the South West.

Neighbouring Stroud recorded five cases of the variant and South Gloucestershire recorded 20 cases.

The highest number of cases in the South West were reported in Bristol, which had 59, and Swindon, with 39.

Gloucester recorded 16 cases and Exeter 5, while the following areas recorded between one and four:

Bath and North East Somerset; Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole; Cheltenham; Cornwall; the Forest of Dean; Mendip; North Somerset; Plymouth; Somerset West and Taunton; Teignbridge; Torbay.

The exact number of cases in these locations is not public in order to avoid identifying anyone who has tested positive.

Any areas of the South West not listed above have not recorded any cases of the Indian variant as of June 2.
