A THOUSAND thank you notes to military heroes have been made into a poppy mosaic to be installed at the REME Museum in Lyneham.

The Remember Together poppy was made for the 2020 Remembrance Day in lockdown to honour those who have served.

The BBC’s local radio stations asked listeners to submit photos of themselves, displaying the name of a service person they wanted to remember.

Head of BBC Local Radio Chris Burns said: “We all know someone who serves or has served in the military. We hope this poppy, made up of a thousand thank you notes, will be a fitting tribute to the British heroes who died in battle, and those who continue to serve.”

The six-foot-tall mosaic will be installed at the museum and unveiled on May 18.

It will be in the museum’s Remembrance Garden, to ensure visitors have a place for quiet reflection.

Director of the museum Major Rick Henderson said: “The poppy is a symbol of remembrance and is a powerful reminder of those people in the military who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The REME Museum is proud to display this piece of art.”

The poppy will be exhibited in Coventry as part of an exhibition as part of its year as UK City of Culture 2021. And it will mark 80 years since more than 500 German bombers destroyed much of the city in an overnight air raid.
