Our readers have nominated the top 10 takeaways in Cirencester, Tetbury, Malmesbury and the surrounding areas, and for the next week we’ll be profiling each of them so you can choose the Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard Best Takeaway 2021.

The third venue we’re showcasing is The Tavern Inn, a pub in Kemble run by brother and sister Dan Keicher and Becky Fear.

After four years as a dine-in pub, the Tavern quickly became known for its pizzas, burgers, hotdogs and Sunday roasts once Dan and Becky turned their hand to takeaways.

The siblings use locally-sourced ingredients in their meals, including buns from Halls Bakery and burgers from Jesse Smith Butchers.

They’ve been selling out almost every week as well as helping some of those who have struggled financially during lockdown.

After finding out they had made the top 10, Dan said: “It’s amazing. We don’t try and be too clever with anything. I think so many country pubs get lost in gastro and fine dining, but we are very much a family friendly pub.”

“I don’t encourage shots, I don’t cater for masses of drinkers, that isn’t what we’re about.”

Outdoor seating will be allowed after Covid restrictions ease on Monday, and Dan has been building animal pens, a tree house, climbing frames, swings and an outdoor bar with decking in preparation.

Asked how he would feel if they won the competition, Dan said: “It would be fantastic. At the moment it’s just me and my sister so between us we are cooking 80 roast dinners, burgers, hot dogs, pizzas plus building an outdoor bar,” he said, adding that he was working from 7:30am to 9pm.

If you think The Tavern Inn should be crowned the best takeaway in the Cotswolds and North Wiltshire, you can vote for them using the voting coupon in this week’s paper (Thursday, April 8).
