Fruitful Malmesbury brings joy to community

Three new trees - one apple and two pear - have been planted on the grass verge at the entrance to the Activity Zone thanks to Fruitful Malmesbury.

The community group work to grow and share more fresh produce, to reduce food waste, and to educate children on environmental and food-related issues.

Sarah Wolferstan, horticulturist and secretary of the Committee explained: “We’ll tend to the trees, including the existing apple trees, and make sure the area is well maintained.

"We’ll also ensure that fruit not used by residents or eaten by passing children is not left to rot.”

The group say they are grateful to already have the support of a number of residents on Bremilham Road, who are willing to keep an eye out for damage and even help with watering when needed.

Oliver Eden and wife Sarah were pleased to be the first neighbours on Bremilham Road to offer to lend a hand, and neighbour Alison Wadsworth was also only too pleased to help the young trees settle in with a good watering.

The group got a licence to plant the trees from Wiltshire Council and a grant from the Emergence Foundation. “It was a long process to get the permission, but it was worth the effort.

"It won’t be long before there’s heaps of fruit for everyone to share.” said Fran Vandelli, chair of the Fruitful Malmesbury Committee.

The new trees are just the beginning of greater plans for the community group.

Laura Morgan Forster, Treasurer of the Committee, said: "This is just the start of Fruitful Malmesbury’s project.

"The new term will see a project in four local schools and more planting in the library courtyard. We also have a food sharing map up and running. "
