Tributes have been paid to Down Ampney stalwart Jean Clemence.

Jean passed away peacefully at Paternoster House, Cirencester on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 aged 90.

Jean lived in the village for 63 years, before moving to Paternoster House two and a half years ago.

Jean was a founder member of Cirencester Ramblers and she and her husband Peter were honoured on the 40th anniversary of Cirencester Ramblers by having a new kissing gate on the footpath from Cirencester to Preston named the Clemence Gate.

Jean was well known to many villagers as the wife of the headteacher of the primary school.

However, in her own right she was a founder member of the Down Ampney Village Shop Society which successfully set up our village community shop.

Jean's interests in travel led her to take part in twinning activities with Cirencester's German twin town Itzehoe, playing host to German visitors offering traditional afternoon tea at her cottage in the village.

Many villagers will have fond memories of Jean.

In line with current Covid-19 restrictions Jean's funeral will be a small affair.

However, her funeral cortege will come to Down Ampney at 10.45 am on Monday and will stop outside no 39 Down Ampney before proceeding slowly through the village on its way out to Kingsdown Crematorium.

Any villagers wishing to pay their respects to Jean will be able to stand on the pavement or by their front doors in a socially distanced manner.

Anyone wishing to give flowers for Jean on the day, can step forward as the cortege slowly passes by and hand them to any of the funeral directors' representatives.
