SWINDON Town assistant manager Tommy Wright hailed a vital win in the club’s bid to avoid relegation after goals from Scott Twine and Brett Pitman secured three points against Northampton Town.

With Swindon ambling towards a half-time deficit following Ryan Martin’s early strike, man of the moment Twine stepped up to curl a lovely free-kick into the top corner and drag the hosts back into the contest.

And after surviving another poor start to the second 45, a glimpse of Swindon’s quality emerged as Jordon Garrick crossed for Pitman to nod in the winner.

Wright admitted his side was certainly bested at the start of both periods, but striking at the right times ensured Swindon made it three games in a row without defeat.

Wright said: “I thought they started both halves better than us, but the goal by Scott Twine just before half-time was vital.

“We didn’t start the second half too well either and Archie (Matthews) made a couple of good saves.

“But then we got Jordon Garrick more in the game – he was a threat, and he got an assist as well. We’re pleased because it was a vital, vital game to get the three points.”

Following a five-game spell where Swindon had lost just twice, the hosts were labelled as favourites for the crunch game at the bottom of League One.

Wright said the confidence of the late win against Crewe Alexandra, and the draw against Lincoln City, may well have pushed his players on to close out the victory against Northampton.

He said: “The best teams have got that desire in abundance. They’re athletic, they’ve got that technical skill, but they’ve also got that desire to win and to keep going.

“How many times have we seen Premier League champions like Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson reference Fergie time? You have to dig in – it’s never easy against whoever you play because everybody wants to win games.

“We’re pleased with that attitude of the players because it was a tough time before where we were low and we weren’t winning games. Hopefully, this run will give us a little boost ahead of two tough games away from home.”
