POLICE arrested a man for drug driving, seized two vehicles and reported four other drivers for various offences while carrying out traffic checks at the County Ground.

The Swindon response team stopped 50 vehicles  during the operation which was carried out to ensure that vehicles were roadworthy and legal and targeted those being driven without insurance. They checked lights, tyres, documents and other essentials.

Officers arrested a 32-year-old man for driving under the influence of drugs and possession of a Class B drug. He is currently in custody at Gablecross Police Station.

The team issued a driver with a vehicle defect ticket for driving on worn out tyres, reported three others for driving without insurance, reported one driver for driving without a licence, and seized two vehicles in one afternoon.

Over the winter months, Wiltshire Police usually sees a dramatic rise in road traffic collisions caused by defective tyres and equipment.

Inspector David Tippetts said: “Illegal and unsafe cars, as well as driving under the influence, continue to be a major contribution towards collisions.

"Therefore it’s pleasing to see that our activity today has shown the majority of road users are responsible and keep their vehicles in legal working order.

"We have taken action against all those drivers who have committed significant offences and passed words of advice to others.

"Anyone using the road network illegally puts themselves, as well as other drivers and pedestrians, at risk.”
