Cotswold District Council leader Joe Harris has welcomed the news of a national lockdown but has criticised the lack of notice for schools, businesses and councils.

The Prime Minister made a televised address at 8pm last night, where he announced a new national lockdown.

People are now being asked to work from home, if possible, and schools will close for most pupils from tomorrow.

It is expected the new lockdown will last until the middle of February.

Pubs, restaurants and cafes will have to close from midnight tonight, but restaurants will be able to continue to offer delivery or takeaway.

Essential retailers such as supermarkets, pharmacies, garden centres, builders merchants may stay open.

Cllr Harris said: "The Prime Minister is right on the lockdown but as usual when these measures are announced there is no notice to schools, no financial support for businesses and no word on support for councils which causes great uncertainty for days and weeks after the initial announcement.

"There appears to be chaos in Government as we lurch from one crisis to another, the Government is in an unenviable position but this is yet another decision too late and after ignoring the scientist's advice.

"I'd urge all residents in the Cotswolds to follow the Government's instructions to stay at home unless they have to for work or volunteering.

"Cotswold District Council will mobilise to support vulnerable residents and when the Government announces any support packages we will work to get these paid as soon as possible."
